Wellbeing & Learning Support

Wellbeing & Learning Support

A place to feel known.
People to turn to.

When you choose a school, you want to know that your child will have people who notice them, listen and help them find their way.

At St Peter’s Catholic College, learning and wellbeing belong together. Our teachers, wellbeing leaders, counsellors and learning support staff work with families to help students feel connected and supported throughout their secondary school journey.

Growing in confidence, together

Secondary school brings new friendships, greater independence and plenty of opportunities to grow. It can also bring moments when a young person needs encouragement, understanding or extra help.

Guided by our Catholic faith and our commitment to care for self and others, we value the whole person. Working together with families helps us understand each student’s strengths, experiences and needs.

Who can your child turn to?

Homeroom teachers

Your child’s homeroom teacher is the first point of contact for everyday wellbeing concerns and changes at home that may affect their school day.

Wellbeing leaders

Each year group has a Leader of Wellbeing who families can contact when further support is needed, including help arranging a College counselling appointment.

Learning support

Subject teachers help with classroom learning. Families can also speak with the Learner Diversity Lead about specific learning support needs.

Our College counsellors

Sometimes, a conversation is the first step

It is not always easy for a young person to explain what is worrying them. Families may also be unsure where to begin.

Our College counsellors are part of the support available to students. Your child’s year group Leader of Wellbeing can help you arrange an appointment and discuss the next step.

What if I am unsure whether my child needs support?

You can begin by sharing what you have noticed with your child’s homeroom teacher. You do not need to have all the answers before starting a conversation.

It may help to describe what has changed, when you noticed it and anything your child has shared with you. Together, you can discuss who is best placed to help.

Learning support and diversity

Understanding how your child learns

Students bring different strengths, experiences and learning needs to the classroom. Understanding those differences starts with a conversation between families and the College.

Whether your question relates to a particular subject or a broader learning need, there is a clear starting point for asking for help.

Help with a particular subject

Contact the subject teacher first about classroom learning, homework, assignments, tests, resources or equipment.

If you need further assistance, the relevant Leader of Learning is the next point of contact.

Discussing additional learning needs

Families with specific learning support questions can contact the College’s Learner Diversity Lead.

This conversation is an opportunity to share your child’s strengths, explain the challenges they experience and discuss their individual needs.

Let the College know about strategies that have helped previously and any relevant information you would like the team to consider.

Students who need both extension and support

A student can have high potential or giftedness alongside neurodivergence or disability. These students are sometimes described as twice exceptional.

At St Peter’s, the High Potential and Gifted Education team works with the Learning Diversity Team to support identified twice-exceptional students through individual case management.

Finding friendship and a sense of belonging

Belonging can begin with a shared interest, a familiar face or the confidence to try something new.

Clubs, creative activities, sport and service give students opportunities to connect beyond their usual classroom groups. They offer different ways to contribute, discover strengths and become part of College life.

My child is finding it difficult to settle in

Starting secondary school or joining a new school can take time. If your child is finding friendships, routines or the school day difficult, contact their homeroom teacher.

Share what your child is finding challenging and what helps them feel comfortable. Their teacher can discuss the concern with you and involve the year group’s Leader of Wellbeing where further support is needed.

I am concerned about a friendship issue or bullying

Please raise your concern with your child’s homeroom teacher or Leader of Wellbeing so the College can understand what has happened and discuss the next steps.

Include relevant details such as when and where it happened, who was involved and anything your child has shared. For an immediate concern during the school day, contact College reception.

You know your child. We value that.

Your insight helps the College understand what your child may need. Changes at home, worries about learning or a shift in how they feel about school are all useful starting points for a conversation.

For everyday wellbeing matters, begin with your child’s homeroom teacher. For a subject concern, begin with their subject teacher.

If you are unsure where to start, call College reception on 02 7256 2125 and ask to be directed to the appropriate staff member.
